This course is designed for BA, MA, and Ph.D. law students with an advanced (C1 or higher) level of English.
As academics with a legal background, you are the people to investigate what legal dilemmas your country faces at the moment and show the world the specificities of the Ukrainian legal system.
As would-be legal practitioners in a country with a prospect of joining the EU, you are expected to familiarize yourself with EU legal concepts to be able to manage the daunting task of translating and transposing EU legislation into national law and potentially work as EU lawyer-linguists one day.
THEREFORE, THIS COURSE HAS THREE MAIN GOALS:
1. Give you an introduction to academic writing in English and help you to start the writing process;
2. Introduce you to EU-specific legal concepts and text genres and show you how law-making in the EU is happening and what EU lawyer-linguists do.
3. Provide you with individualized linguistic assistance while you are writing your term paper;
Your professor is a linguist with an academic background and a practicing (EN/DE/FR/HU) conference interpreter with 20 years of experience with the drafting process of EU legal texts.
ACCORDING TO PLAN
- the first 6-7 lessons will be devoted to Task 1
- the subsequent 3-4 lessons will be devoted to Task 2 and
- 2 lessons will be devoted to discussing your papers, error correction, and fine-tuning.
YOU ARE EXPECTED
- to tune in for every lesson, be present (mandatory)
- to make progress with the Quizlet exercises in the background (recommended)
- to start writing your term paper (or mock essay) ASAP (mandatory)
- send me excerpts of it individually for review (optional)
- hand in your term paper (mock essay) before the one-but-last lesson (mandatory)
