New in Moodle 2025/26 AY

Enhanced Moodle user enrolment functionality

Designing and implementing a flexible enrolment workflow that allows instructors to:

  • Bulk enrol existing external and CEU users via email list
  • Enrol CEU users who do not yet have an account
  • (For users with account creation rights) create new accounts for external users

  • Redesigned course import

  • Course images are included now, if the target course does not have one yet.
  • The default search logic is significantly improved - in addition to search for a matching title, it always shows the matching courses by course code now.

  • Course editing, navigation and notification improvements

  1. 1. Collapsed sections can be viewed as individual pages, either by:

    2. Activity and resource menus contain an 'Availability' option.
This allows you to toggle between availability modes (show, hide, or make available).

    availability modes

    3. Topics are renamed to "Sections" or "custom sections" in the edit menu.

    4. New notification messages for students
Students now receive notifications for upcoming assignments (24 hours before the due date). Also we have a new notification when a Quiz is about to open.

New search courses bar at the bottom of the course list

The core Moodle course search box does search in many fields (such as summaries) which can return overly broad results.

I have designed a new search bar that uses exact match logic, so by default you search for a continuous match.

If you prefer AND logic, simply insert the word AND between your search terms. This will return results containing both words, even if they are not next to each other.

I hope our newly developed function will make searching for courses in Moodle much easier and more precise.

Structural enhancements

These improvements are not directly visible to end users, but many core functions have been redesigned to make the site safer and faster. Minor bugs have been fixed, and several underlying issues—such as SITS connection errors, faulty assignment submissions, and PDF conversion problems—have been resolved.

Also many regularly running tasks were made more effective, taking less time.

Accessibility Enhancements

  • Led extensive accessibility enhancements in Moodle
Implementing improvements across navigation menus, forms, content display, and interactive components to meet WCAG standards and improve usability for all learners. Key achievements in the collapsed menu below.

  • Screen reader optimization: refined menu structures, improved link text clarity, and ensured dynamic elements announce state changes.

  • Keyboard navigation improvements: fixed focus order issues, ensured logical tabbing, and resolved modal trapping problems.

  • Contrast and visual clarity: updated color schemes, button states, and labels to meet accessibility contrast guidelines.

  • Content accessibility: improved semantic structure, heading hierarchy, and alternative text support in Moodle activities and resources.

  • Resolved platform-wide accessibility issues identified by WAVE, Silktide, and internal testing, including Book activity, messaging drawer, feedback forms, and course index.

Still relevant improvements from 2024/25
  • TimeEdit - automatic links are available for the courses leading to TE StudyGuide
The link to the course information in StudyGuide is visible to students at the "about this course" section at the course footer, and the top of General section. The link is also publicly available in the course summary (outside the course).
  • Welcome message for enrolling students - new function in the redesigned "Access control" menu
Newly enrolling students will receive an automatic welcome message regardless of enrolment method. You can supplement the email template.
  • Accordion (collapsible text) resource - A new resource to add text into the course in accordion-style menus.
