This course provides an overview of current developments in social media, with a particular focus on museums in Austria. Which platforms are used by whom? Which target groups can be reached where? How does institutional communication differ from personal accounts? What legal frameworks need to be considered? How do you build a community and increase reach? When is it worthwhile to collaborate with influencers or use paid advertising? Together, we will analyze what makes a successful post and how digital storytelling works. 

Assessment: Students are expected to come to class with prepared questions or topics for each of the weekly speakers.   

Learning outcomes:  

  1. A critical understanding of digital storytelling in the museum 

  1. Develop a vocabulary for discussing how to use social media in cultural institutions 

  1. Gain insight into how museums use various platforms to reach wide audiences and convey informatoin 

  1. Gain experience and insight into museum careers beyond curatorial work 

 Skills that will be practiced and developed: 

  1. Communicate ideas and arguments effectively, in an accurate, succinct, and lucid manner in both written and oral form 

  1. Develop analytical skills in the context of museum structures  

  1. Work with others as part of a group in seminar or seminar discussions
