The final decades of the Ottoman period and the dawn of the Turkish Republic mark a period of rapid and profound change. It has inspired a great deal of recent academic work due to its importance in the broader arc of regional and global history combined with the abundance of sources available for use. This course will focus intellectual and cultural trends, including modernism, romanticism, Ottomanism, nationalism, positivism and Orientalism among others. Students will gain an appreciation of the intellectual and cultural currents that shaped the zeitgeist with attention to regional and global networks and the circulation of ideas and cultural forms.
