This course will offer an introduction to selected modern critical approaches as applied to medieval literature produced and circulated in Latin during the Middle Ages (ca. 500 to 1300 CE). We will explore the conceptual framework needed for an adequate understanding of medieval literary texts, the historical and cultural contexts which left their imprint on these texts, and various aspects of modern critical theory, e.g., concepts, generic critical approaches, and specific interpretive strategies developed by modern scholarship meant to facilitate a better interpretation of medieval literary texts or a better appreciation of their aesthetic value.
