In order to complete teaching in the CEU Jewish Studies program, which will mainly explore subjects of modern Jewish history, sociology, politics, and culture, this short pre-session course intends to give a background understanding of Judaism as a religious, intellectual, and literary tradition. The three sessions will consist of introductions to the historical memories of Judaism, to its ritual, liturgical, and legal practice, and to its fundamental texts, illustrated by a selection of short readings that will be distributed and discussed in class. The course is mandatory for CEU students in the Jewish Studies Specialization and open to interested students outside the program.
